Considering IVF Treatment in Malaysia?
IVF (in vitro fertilization) is a fertility treatment technique that mimics the process of human fertilization in a laboratory. Since the announcement of the first IVF pregnancy in Australia in 1973, hope has become a reality for countless couples, including countries like Malaysia, who have been able to have a child with this type of treatment. It is an effective treatment for almost all causes of infertility.
The Essential Stages of IVF Treatment: From Stimulation to Transfer
While it is now readily and widely available, a high degree of knowledge, skill and attention to detail by the fertility specialist and laboratory team is required to achieve consistently high pregnancy success rates.
IVF involves removing eggs from the woman’s body, fertilizing them in the laboratory with her partner’s sperm, and transferring the resulting embryos back into her uterus between 2 to 6 days later. The procedure involves these main steps:
- Stimulation of the woman’s ovary with hormone injections to produce more eggs.
- Removing the eggs from the woman’s body (egg collection procedure).
- Obtaining the partner’s semen(sperm).
- Fertilization of the eggs in the laboratory.
- Placing the embryos into the uterus (embryo transfer procedure).
- Using further medications to strengthen the uterus (womb) until the day of the pregnancy test (2 weeks after the embryo transfer procedure).
Surplus viable embryos can be frozen and used at a later stage, should the couple want to attempt pregnancy again.

FAQs About In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in Malaysia
1. Who is a good candidate for IVF treatment?
IVF treatment is recommended for couples facing various fertility challenges, including blocked fallopian tubes, severe male factor infertility, endometriosis, or unexplained infertility. It’s also suitable for women with diminished ovarian reserve or those who haven’t succeeded with other fertility treatments.
Our Fertility Specialists will evaluate your specific situation through comprehensive testing to determine if IVF is the right option.
2. If you have had IVF treatment before, do you still need to repeat fertility assessment?
Depending on your most recent test results, our Fertility Specialist will review your case and may recommend a reassessment to determine your current fertility status.
3. Can our Fertility Specialist perform a frozen embryo transfer using embryos you have stored at another clinic?
Yes, it may be possible to transfer your frozen embryos to our clinic for treatment with our Fertility Specialists. However, due to the strict protocols and code of practices set by RTAC (Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee), we first need to verify that the laboratory currently storing your frozen embryos is RTAC accredited.
Additionally, a consultation with our Fertility Specialist is required before proceeding with any treatment or relocation of your embryos (including frozen eggs or sperm).
4. Do we offer Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)?
Yes, we do offer Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT). We provide two main types of preimplantation genetic testing:
- PGT-A (for aneuploidy): This test screens embryos for the correct number of chromosomes.
- PGT-M (for monogenic/single gene defects): This test is used when there is a known genetic condition in the family and screens embryos for that specific condition.
Our Fertility Specialists will work closely with you to determine which type of PGT best suits your individual needs and circumstances.
5. How soon can you start IVF treatment?
After an assessment with our Fertility Specialist, they’ll advise when your body is in the best condition to begin IVF. Typically, this process takes about 1-2 months, but it truly depends on your individual fertility status.
6. Does age affect my pregnancy chances with IVF fertility treatment?
Yes, age significantly influences IVF success rates, primarily due to changes in egg quality and quantity. Women under 35 generally experience higher success rates, while those above 35 may benefit from advanced techniques like genetic testing of embryos. Your chances will be discussed in detail during your consultation, taking your age and other factors into account.
7. Can IVF be combined with other fertility treatments?
Yes, IVF can be enhanced with various complementary treatments to improve success rates. These may include ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) for male factor infertility, genetic testing of embryos (PGT-A), or assisted hatching. These options are considered based on your diagnosis and treatment goals to help improve the likelihood of success.
8. Will I need to take time off work for IVF?
Most patients can continue working throughout much of their IVF journey. While egg retrieval may require a day or two off. The embryo transfer is usually a brief procedure, and your care team will help you coordinate your schedule for minimal disruption.
